The general emergency number, for these services has been changed from 115 to 112. It will be answered in Portuguese as well as English and French.
You can phone 112 direct on any mobile phone without the secure pin code ( just switch on and dial 112)
Shops
Open from 9am - 1pm and from 3pm - 7pm, Monday till Friday. Saturday open from 9am till 1pm. Shops and supermarkets in tourist area's are open all day from 9am. to Late. but quite a few in less touristic areas still maintain the time-honored tradition of closing between 1 and 3 p.m.
Telephones
Telephone calls can be made at each post office and at telephone boxes. credit card phone's are existing but rare to find. moost phone boxes are working with phone cards, available at post offices and bookshops ( look at the board in the phone box for the nearest place ).
To phone abroad- dial -00- followed by the country code, area code (minus initial zero) and telephone number. A complete listing of country codes can be found in the telephone directory which is available from the post office clerk or just ask at your hotel reception

Banks
Open Monday to Friday, from 8.30am to 3pm. Closed Saturdays, Sundays and National Holidays including Bank Holidays.
You'll need your passport to exchange money.
Look for the sign "cambios"' which is the exchange area.

 220V, frequency 50 Hertz. Current sockets according to European standards. Blade plugs require a transformer for 220 volts and adapter plug.

Tap water
The tap water is safe to drink throughout the country, but it is a good idea to instead buy some bottled water available, especially in high season in the Algarve.
Post Offices
(Correio) are mostly open (8) 9 - 12.30 and 14.30 - 18.00, Monday to Friday. Main post      offices are open lunchtime and Saturday morning.
